What to Expect During a Professional Air Duct Cleaning

Before the appointment

A good duct cleaning company asks a few questions ahead of time: how many HVAC systems you have, roughly how many registers, whether you want the dryer vent included, and anything you have noticed like odors or weak airflow. On the day, clear a path to the furnace or air handler and move anything fragile away from registers. Pets are best kept in a room the technicians are not working in.

The inspection

The job should start with a look inside your system, not with equipment being unloaded. The technician removes a few registers, checks the return side, opens the blower compartment, and takes photos. This is when you find out how dirty the system is and whether anything unexpected is going on, such as disconnected ducts or pest activity. It is also your chance to ask questions.

Setting up negative pressure

The core of a real duct cleaning is source removal under negative pressure. The technician connects a high-powered vacuum to the main trunk line, usually through an access opening cut near the furnace, and seals the registers. Once the vacuum runs, the entire duct system is under suction, so anything loosened inside travels toward the vacuum and out of the house rather than into your rooms.

Cleaning each run

Working one register at a time, the technician feeds air whips, rotary brushes, or compressed-air tools into each branch duct and works them toward the trunk. This agitation is what actually breaks loose the layer of dust stuck to the duct walls. The supply side and the return side are both cleaned, since the returns are where most of the dust enters. Registers and grilles are cleaned separately and reinstalled.

The blower and the coil

The blower compartment is opened and the blower wheel and housing are cleaned. If the evaporator coil is accessible and dirty, it is cleaned as well, or the technician will point it out and recommend it. Skipping this step is a shortcut; a dirty blower makes clean ducts dirty again quickly.

Sealing up

Any access opening cut for the vacuum is closed with a proper sheet-metal plate and sealed. Panels go back on, registers go back in, and the work area is cleaned up. Floors near the equipment should have been protected from the start.

The walk-through

The technician shows you after photos next to the before photos and walks you through anything they noticed that you should know about, such as a filter issue, a damaged dryer vent, or a spot of moisture. You should leave the appointment knowing exactly what was done.

How long it takes
